Problem The recent tragedy of glacier collapse in Blatten and the increasing frequency of heatwaves underscore the vulnerabilities of the Swiss Alps to extreme weather events. It emphasizes the need for more dynamic, data-driven solutions to enhance the resilience of Swiss society against such events and their consequences.
Objective The problem statement is framed openly on purpose to let the hackers be creative and compound in their own observations of the impact extreme weather events and their consequences. We provide some key directions:
- Innovative Parametric Insurance Solutions Design and prototype a parametric insurance model with innovative trigger mechanisms based on real-time environmental data
- AI-Powered Early Warning Systems Design and develop an AI-powered app enabling to better apprehend selected risk (e.g., landslides, glacier collapses, etc.)
- Intelligent Disaster Response Platform Prototype a platform for real-time disaster coordination with integration of open-source exposure data and optimized resource allocation in case of disaster
- Any other type of solution! Be creative and feel free to think and build completely out of the box!
Support for Hackers
- Various open-source datasets will be provided; ranging from weather to topologic data.
- Hackers will be supported by experts on site; both from a technical side and from a business side.C13
Technical Preferences
- You can use anything that you find fit for purpose. We have a preference for open-source libraries and are more familiar with MS Azure, but it is up to you.
Why hack?
- Reflect broader on how data & tech can bring relief to societies vulnerable to extreme weather events
- Actually contribute in making the Swiss society more resilient
- Work on exciting, multimodal data, to which you can relate to.

About the Challenge Partner
Today, 75% of risks – from natural catastrophes to ageing populations and cybercrime – remain uninsured. At Swiss Re, we aim to change that, making societies more resilient by providing (re-)insurance and risk related services.
To make it a reality, Swiss Re evolved into a data and tech-centric company. AI became a central enabler, allowing us to gain superior risk insights, to better understand its evolution and ultimately provide appropriate protection and covers to our clients and ultimately to individuals. Data scientists & AI engineers work together with underwriters, claims experts and actuaries to augment current processes, model complex realities such as pandemics, simulate the impact of natural catastrophes…
